Hanoi, Vietnam – November 10, 2023: The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) officially launched a training course on using specialized software to construct, manage, and operate Vietnam’s National Geographic Database. Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Phuong Hoa attended and delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Hoang Ngoc Lam, Director General of the Department of Survey, Mapping and Geographic Information Vietnam; Mr. Duong Van Hai, Deputy Director General of the Department of Surveying, Mapping, and Geographic Information of Vietnam; Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen, Deputy Director of the Personnel Department; Ms. Vu Thi Hang, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology; leaders and representatives from various departments under MONRE; as well as leaders from the Departments of Natural Resources and Environment from 63 provinces and cities nationwide, connecting via an online platform. Nearly 3,000 participants, including managers, and technical staff from ministries, sectors, localities, and research institutes across the country, were in attendance.

In her opening remarks, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Phuong Hoa emphasized the significance of Vietnam’s national geographic database in various sectors, including planning, urban management, natural resource and environmental management, security, national defense, scientific research, and emergency response (natural disasters, epidemics, etc.). She highlighted its role as the foundation for all other specialized databases.
Deputy Minister Hoa also noted that MONRE has been providing national geospatial data to ministries, branches, and localities for planning, urban management, and socio-economic development.

To ensure the efficient management, exploitation, and utilization of Vietnam’s national geographic database, which MONRE has built and provided to ministries and localities, the ministry launched the “Training course on the use of specialized software for building, managing, an operating Vietnam’s national geographic database” through an online E-learning platform. This training will help participants easily grasp both basic and advanced knowledge of building and updating geographic databases, ensuring a unified and effective approach, in line with the nation’s digital transformation efforts.

Mr. Hoang Ngoc Lam, Director General of the Department of Survey, Mapping and Geographic Information Vietnam, highlighted the new and modern approach to training, which addresses the needs of the country’s digital transformation. This method overcomes geographical barriers and offers flexible learning at any time and place, making use of a digital platform that includes video lectures, saving both travel time and costs for participants.
